WICKWAR WANDERERS
LATEST NEWS
WICKWAR Wanderers Under-15s claimed the Tom Moore Cup for the first time in their history with a fabulous 1-0 extra-time derby victory over close rivals Charfield.
It's been a great season for the club, who also won the Stroud Youth League title as well as the league's annual end-of-season six-a-side tournament at Stonehouse, beating Wanswell 1-0 courtesy of George Whatley's goal.
It meant the last time this Wanderers team lost a competitive match was in the final of the same tournament 12 months previous, when they lost to Malmesbury, the side they exacted revenge over in this season's semi-final encounter after a penalty shoot-out.
Wickwar chairman Bob Banister enthused: "It's been a superb effort from the boys from start to finish and they've thoroughly deserved their successes."
As for the Tom Moore League Cup final with Charfield, the first 15 minutes saw much of the game played in Wickwar’s half but strong defending meant that Dan Page had little to deal with in their goal.
The best chance of the half fell to Wickwar’s Oliver McAfee, whose powerful 30-yard shot drew a good save from the keeper.
The second half was just as tight but Wickwar had the edge and missed two good chances to take the lead before Jamie Stephens, now in the Wanderers goal, tipped a swirling cross over the bar to take the contest to extra-time.
It took seven minutes of the additional action for Wickwar to finally clinch victory. A corner came back out to Robert Banister whose superb cross was helped on by Max Minter for Alex Lumsden to fire home from close range.
Charfield fought back and Joe Moore hit the post in the closing minutes but they could not get through a determined opposition rearguard.
ABOUT US
THEY may not be the biggest of football enterprises in the region but Wanderers are proud of what they deliver to their public.
Based at the playing fields in the picturesque Cotswold village of Wickwar in South Gloucestershire, the club provide football for men and children of all ages.
While they have two senior sides competing hard in the Stroud League, it is perhaps the youth wing of the club that gives rise to most satisfaction, with sections catering for boys and girls from the age of six, sometimes younger. Females up to the age of ten are also well looked after.
Wickwar seniors usually train on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at their HQ off the main route into the village from the M5 at junction 14. Sometimes, however, they’ll utilise facilities at nearby KLB School, Wotton-under-Edge, and Yate Outdoor Sports Complex at Brimsham Green School.
Youth players train at the playing fields on Sunday mornings.
A spokesman for Wanderers said: “We tend to look for local kids to join us although players can come from further afield.
“We have a strong committee at the club with a lot of very committed parents helping behind the scenes and we have a full social committee too, always busy organising fund-raising functions. We’re very proud of what we have here.”
